Project summary

Challenge

Redesign the ROAMpay mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) experience from the ground up, transforming a dated, utilitarian interface into a modern, flexible, and scalable solution. The original app lacked visual clarity, tablet optimization, and support for a growing client need: white-label customization. How might we create a simpler, faster, and more adaptable product that supports merchants of all sizes, and unlocks new business opportunities?

Solution

Create ROAMpay X5 — a streamlined, modernized mobile POS app optimized for both phones and tablets. The new experience needed to feel intuitive and professional, while supporting custom branding through a white-label platform. It also had to deliver on performance, scalability, and ease of use, giving merchants a fast, efficient way to manage payments and customers, with the flexibility to grow.

Result

ROAMpay X5 launched successfully and immediately delivered impact across key business and user goals. The redesigned experience aligned with Ingenico Group’s updated branding, improved merchant satisfaction, and introduced a turnkey white-label system that reduced time-to-market for client-branded versions. It also laid the foundation for continued innovation with a scalable, flexible design and development framework.

My role

As Ingenico Group’s first product designer, I led the UX and UI design for ROAMpay X5, from research and product strategy to high-fidelity design and developer handoff. I collaborated closely with product, engineering, and stakeholders to define the experience, optimize for tablet use, and build out a white-label solution. I also created the design process and documentation for client branding, ensuring consistency, clarity, and scalability for future releases.

Background

ROAMpay is Ingenico Group’s latest mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) solution — built from the ground up to meet the evolving needs of today’s merchants. Designed for both smartphones and tablets, ROAMpay delivers a seamless, fast, and secure checkout experience, paired with quick access to vital business data. It enables merchants to accept payments on the go while streamlining transactions, reducing operational costs, and expanding their customer base.

My role

As Ingenico Group’s first product designer, I led the end-to-end UI and UX design process for our mobile payment solutions. I collaborated closely with product managers to translate customer insights and analytics into goal-driven, intuitive user experiences. I leveraged UX research to design branded, responsive interfaces for advanced mPOS use cases, ensuring each experience aligned with both business goals and user needs.

I also partnered with developers to streamline the handoff process and maintain consistency through implementation. In addition, I managed all client-facing branding efforts, including the creation of Ingenico’s mPOS White Label Platform, defining the full design and delivery process to support scalable, customizable white-label solutions.

Challenge

While the current version of ROAMpay was functional, it had started to feel outdated both visually and experientially. The interface lacked alignment with Ingenico Group’s updated brand guidelines, and the user experience no longer reflected the simplicity and flexibility modern merchants expect. Additionally, the app was not optimized for tablets — an increasingly important platform in the mobile payment space.

A major business opportunity also emerged: introducing a white-label solution that would allow clients to easily brand and customize the app. However, the existing architecture didn’t support this kind of flexibility.

Solution

Our goal was to create and launch ROAMpay X5, a redesigned version of the app focused on delivering a cleaner, more intuitive experience without compromising the robustness of the original. Key focuses included:

  • A simplified, modern UI and streamlined UX

  • Optimized support for tablet devices, leveraging larger screen real estate

  • Built-in flexibility for white-label integrations, enabling clients to easily incorporate their own branding and bring solutions to market faster

ROAMpay X5 would preserve the features users relied on, while transforming the platform into a more adaptable and scalable solution for both Ingenico and its clients.

Project goals

Success would be defined by achieving the following outcomes:

  • Deliver a redesigned experience centered on simplicity, flexibility, and efficiency

  • Align visual design with Ingenico Group’s updated branding and style guidelines

  • Create a truly native tablet experience that increases merchant adoption and satisfaction

  • Develop a turnkey white-label solution to reduce time-to-market for client-branded versions

  • Ensure the white-label process is easy to communicate, integrate, and streamline for both business and development teams

User research

To inform our solution, my PM and I adopted a Lean UX approach grounded in both past insights and current user assumptions. We started by asking key questions to validate our direction:

  • Who are our current and future users?

  • What are they trying to accomplish with the product?

  • In what situations is it used?

  • What features matter most to them?

  • What unmet needs or constraints shape their behavior?

  • What does success look like from their perspective?

I worked closely with PMs who had direct customer relationships, leveraging their insights along with behavioral metrics from the previous version of the app. These data points helped shape the direction of the new design.

I collaborated with my PM and stakeholders to align on business goals and user needs, ensuring the design was focused, realistic, and purpose-driven. Beyond launch, we transitioned to a more traditional research strategy, continuously gathering user feedback and data to inform iterations and shape future feature development.

Ideation & product strategy

With a strong foundation of user insights in place, and user and business goals formalized, I transitioned into ideation with a clear goal: to translate what we know into an actionable design strategy. I followed a full UI/UX process, from early brainstorming and user flows to wireframes, interactive prototypes, and polished high-fidelity designs.

Visual & UX designs

The following examples showcase a range of visual designs and user experiences created throughout various stages of the ROAMpay X5 project. Some reflect final, released designs, while others represent early concepts and explorations. Together, they highlight key milestones, feature rollouts, and iterative improvements made across multiple phases of the product lifecycle.

The UI was designed to be simple, streamlined, and predictable, with a clear focus on usability, brand alignment, and platform flexibility. It supports both native iOS and Android environments and is optimized for smartphones and tablets, in both portrait and landscape orientations. At its core, the design centers on delivering a faster, more efficient, and purpose-driven checkout experience.

White-label solution

One of the key design goals was to create a completely new white-label process. The objective was to make it easy and efficient for clients to customize the app with their own branding — including colors, typography, logos, and other assets. This required designing and documenting a streamlined process that could be clearly communicated across customers, as well as Ingenico Group’s product, design, and engineering teams. The result was a scalable system that balanced flexibility with consistency.
